A workshop entitled, “Technology in Speech-Language Therapy: Evaluation and Integration of iPads and iOS Apps” will be presented on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, from 5:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at our office located at 977 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02451. The speaker will be Karen Waddill, a practicing speech-language pathologist and assistive technology professional.
This workshop provides theoretical and practical knowledge related to using iPads and iOS apps. A brief overview of assistive technology and current research in mobile technology for therapy opens the session. A combination of lecture, videos and demonstration is used to share information about iOS apps from targeted categories (Executive Function, Social Cognition, Self Regulation, Apraxia).
Participants will be provided time for hands-on practice with iPads. The session concludes with small and large group activities related to assessing the quality of apps and connecting apps with therapeutic goals.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify two sources to locate information about iOS apps.
2. Demonstrate how to use accessibility features to enhance therapeutic activities and/or improve functional communication performance of clients.
3. List up to five iOS apps to supplement assessment and therapeutic intervention.
4. Assess the quality of iOS apps using reviews and rubrics.
5. Connect iOS apps with client’s therapeutic goals.
Relevant financial relationships – As Director of Cotting Consulting, Karen provides and oversees assistive technology services to public and private K-12 schools. Karen is a frequent speaker at school professional development trainings and conferences. As a Visiting Lecturer at Fitchburg State University, she teaches graduate courses in Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology. She will receive an honorarium for this presentation.
